Finally, we close this section by noting one of the Governor’s most bizarre vetoes – that of a bill that merely sought to set up a study commission to examine the state’s medical marijuana law and possible ways to provide a safe means for authorized patients to obtain the drug through compassion centers regulated by the state. The Governor, who had previously vetoed the law allowing medical marijuana use in the first place (but had his veto overridden by the General Assembly), stated in his veto message that any examination of the issue could only lead to a weakening of “laws governing illicit drugs.” The ACLU will urge the Assembly to override these vetoes if legislators return for a special session. ACLU members are encouraged to help in that endeavor.
