Our organization closely watches legislation that could bar otherwise qualified individuals from employment on the basis of a past outdated or irrelevant criminal record. We raised concerns about this legislation, which would require that every “youth camp” staff member “obtain a criminal record check” and that each camp maintain “an adequate and competent staff of good character and reputation.” The bill contained no limitations on what offenses revealed from a criminal record check may serve as disqualifying for any staff member. Ultimately, this bill died in committee.
