Though we appreciated its laudable goal, we opposed legislation which would require the state Department of Education to offer a kosher meal school lunch option to school districts. Noting that there is always a First Amendment concern when a law explicitly singles out a particular religion or religious activity for special treatment without grounding that legislative action with an identifiable secular rationale, we also noted that there are a number of other accommodations that students practicing other religions might legitimately question the absence of. This legislation died in committee.
