While closing the wage gap is essential for the economic and social growth of Rhode Island, it is particularly important for BIPOC women, who are more likely to have lower incomes and be in poverty than virtually all other demographics. We supported this legislation that would address the issue of unequal pay for female workers, and would ban harmful employment practices that allow employers to ask for the former salary of a prospective employee while barring employees from discussing their own salaries with others.

A separate piece of legislation (H 5584) independently introduced a bar on asking for the former salary of a prespective employee.
