Though encouraging voter registration is an important and laudable cause, we were constrained to oppose this legislation which would have changed the current opt-in process for registering to vote at the DMV to an opt-out method. We are generally concerned that opt-out procedures do not center informed consent and autonomy in the same way that opt-in methods do, and were further concerned that this legislation, which would require the DMV to make determinations about eligibility for voter registration, could lead to unfortunately fraught interactions between DMV clients and employees. This bill died in committee.
