We all know how important the Access to Public Records Act is for public oversight. Just as important are the laws setting standards for the collection and maintenance of records produced by public bodies. In supporting these two pieces of legislation which would make revisions to the Public Records Administration Act, we urged that they be strengthened to include uniform protocols and lines of authority for the maintenance and public accessibility of web-posted records. That proposal was prompted by a recent experience we had: a request for news releases issued by the RI State Police resulted in a fruitless search after the police apprised us that they did not have hard copies of news releases deleted from their website, but also had no way to access the deleted content.
