Following the 2021 implementation of a statewide infrastructure for a body-worn camera (BWC) program, we supported legislation which would have put in place statutory policies regarding the activation of BWCs; included meaningful access to BWC footage that simultaneously protects privacy interests; and provided disciplinary protocols for officers who fail to activate their BWCs. We further urged the addition of provisions to set a uniform retention standard for BWC footage and prohibit the use of facial recognition technology with BWCs. Unfortunately, this bill died in committee.
