The attorneys for the RI ACLU and the Cranston School Committee have today submitted a formal judgment in the lawsuit filed by the ACLU last year challenging the presence of a school prayer mural in Cranston High School West’s auditorium. The case will be officially concluded when the judgment is signed by U.S. District Judge Ronald R. Lagueux. The terms of the judgment are provided below:

  • The Court “declares that the maintenance and display of the ‘School Prayer mural’ at Cranston High School West … deprived plaintiff of rights secured by the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution”;
  • The school committee “and anyone in active concert or participation with them are permanently enjoined to immediately and permanently remove the ‘School Prayer mural’ from Cranston High School West”;
  • Jessica Ahlquist is awarded compensatory damages in the amount of $25.00;
  • The RI ACLU attorneys “are awarded costs and attorneys’ fees in the agreed-upon amount of $150,000.00”; and
  • All parties waive their respective rights of appeal.
