I joined the ACLU more than twenty years ago. I was excited then, and I’m still excited now. I believe we have certain rights regardless of whether we agree with each other or not.
I remember a Nazi group was protesting in the Midwest 20 years ago or more. I do NOT believe in what they have to offer, but I was so proud that the ACLU fought for their free speech rights.
Today, we really need the ACLU to keep people well-protected. Our communities were starting to move ahead with basic rights. Rights issues around breastfeeding, LGBT, abortion, and many others were gaining visibility.
Since the 2016 election, we’ve turned ourselves around and gone backwards. Everyday, there is something that absolutely flabbergasts me! Yesterday we were given an announcement – via twitter - that transgender military personnel could no longer serve. I remember how we lived in the 50s. I remember how we lived in the 70s and the 80s. I especially remember the last 8 years.
I want to keep protecting rights, and I'm glad the ACLU is around. What would we do without them?
